Harry Maguire admits Manchester United deserves criticism for their poor performances this season, but has downplayed rumors of disharmony in the locker room.
Ralf Rangnick suffered his first loss as an interim coach to the Wolves last week, which was followed by reports of unrest among the players.
Maguire said United, seventh in the Premier League, must do better as it prepares for an FA Cup third-round draw against Aston Villa on Monday.
“Obviously I have seen a lot of criticism and a lot of it is absolutely justified, but for me, with this team, I shouldn’t need criticism to motivate the players,” Maguire said in an interview posted on the club’s website.
“We all have a great responsibility to bear, me as captain as much as anyone, if not more,” he said.
“We have to start playing well and win…. This team finished second last year and we have a bigger and better squad this year so we have to show the right attitude. ”
Maguire played down suggestions of disharmony between the players, but admitted that it was difficult to keep everyone on a large team happy.
“We are all angry and want to do our best, which has probably been noticed on the pitch at times, but the team spirit is good, despite what people say,” said the English defender.
“Being a professional footballer, you have to accept criticism with your chin and react well to it. At the same time, sometimes you have to ignore the outside noise and just hang your head (in training) ”.
The former Leicester defender added: “I came here to win titles. He could have signed elsewhere, but he wanted to be at United and help them regain the winning form the club had in the Sir Alex (Ferguson) era.
“It will come if we all stay together. I grew up idolizing people like Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, and I want to repeat what they accomplished. ”
